_ | Blade Runner |
1982 |
A model of Han Solo's ship from the original Star Wars trilogy, the Millennium Falcon, was used as a futuristic building in several scenes throughout the film. Model Maker William George had been scratch-building the model in his spare time for his own amusement. During the filming of Blade Runner, the model making team was desperate to get more buildings into the L.A. cityscape. So they took George's five-foot-tall, wood and plastic model, decked it out with etched brass, tubing and fiber optics for illumination and placed into several scenes.
The Falcon/building makes most of its appearances when Gaff and Deckard are flying in the police spinner to the police station. The Falcon is standing on it's tail end and has a large platform with towers and spires on the nose. So as you looking at the building from the side, you'll be seeing a top (or bottom) view of the ship. Also the cockpit has been removed from the side so it's harder to recognize.

Even though it was not intended as a compliment, Waters was delighted with the nickname. Apparently he was saving it in the back of his mind for the time when he would satirize everything the mainstream film industry stands for. That time has apparently come. As the opening credits roll for "Cecil B. DeMented," Waters shows the marquees of one humongous multiplex chain after another, all of which are showing a "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones" sequel.

Rocky (Gibson) says, 'Look at the SIZE of that thing!' upon seeing the pie machine.
the scene in the pie machine where Rocky and Ginger have to avoid the pies is just like Indy avoiding the wrong stones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just as they are getting out of the oven, Rocky and Ginger slide out from under the door just in time and right before the door closes Ginger grabs her beret which is still on the inside of the closing door also, as Rocky and Ginger are running to the end of the pie machine a series of gears cross their paths and then a group of gears rolls after them (boulder after Indy) A deleted scene from the pie machine: Rocky comes face-to-face with a chicken skeleton inside the machine, like Indy comes face-to-face with Forrestal's skeleton in Raiders. In the making of Chicken Run (on the DVD special features) Nick Park (creator/animator) is describing the huge chicken machine as, "...the Death Star of chicken-dom" When in the machine, Ginger and Rocky leap off of a platform and swing across just like Luke and Leah. |

Hooper whips his head around, looking for the source of the comment HOOPER Who said that?!? HOLDEN (standing) I did! Lando Calrissian is a positive black role model in the realm of Science Fiction/Fantasy. HOOPER F**k Lando Calrissian! Uncle Tom n**ger! Always some white boy gotta invoke 'the holy trilogy!' Bust this - those movies are about how the white man keeps the brother man down - even in a galaxy far, far away. Check this s**t. You got cracker farm-boy Luke Skywalker, Nazi poster boy - blond hair, blue eyes. And then you've got Darth Vader: the blackest brother in the galaxy. Nubian God. BANKY (Lee) What's a Nubian? HOOPER Shut the f**k up! Now Vader, he's a spiritual brother, with the force and all that s**t. Then this cracker Skywalker gets his hands on a light- saber, and the boy decides he's gonna run the f**king universe - gets a whole Klan of whites together, and they're gonna bust up Vader's 'hood the Death Star. Now what the f**k do you call that! BANKY Intergalactic Civil War! HOOPER Gentrification. They're gonna drive our the black element, to make the galaxy quote, unquote 'safe' for white folks. HOLDEN But Vader turns, out to be Luke's father. And in Jedi, they become friends. HOOPER Don't make me bust a cap in your a*s, yo! Jedi's the most insulting installment, because Vader's beautiful, black visage is sullied when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty white man! They're trying to tell us that deep inside, we all want to be white! |

script RANDAL (Anderson) 'there was something else going on in Jedi. I never noticed it until today.' DANTE (O'Halloran): What's that? RANDAL: All right, Vader's boss... DANTE: The Emperor. RANDAL: Right, the Emperor. Now the Emperor is kind of a spiritual figure, yes? DANTE: How do you mean? RANDAL: Well, he's like the pope for the dark side of the Force. He's a holy man; a shaman, kind of, albeit an evil one. DANTE: I guess. RANDAL: Now, he's in charge of the Empire. The Imperial government is under his control. And the entire galaxy is under Imperial rule. DANTE: Yeah. RANDAL: Then wouldn't that logically mean that it's a theocracy? If the head of the Empire is a priest of some sort, then it stands to reason that the government is therefore one based on religion. DANTE: It would stand to reason, yes. RANDAL: Hence, the Empire was a fascist theocracy, and the rebel forces were therefore battling religious persecution. DANTE: More or less. RANDAL: The only problem is that at no point in the series did I ever hear Leia or any of the rebels declare a particular religious belief. DANTE: I think they were Catholics'
RANDAL: You know what I just watched? DANTE: Me pulling a can off some moron's fist RANDAL: Return of the Jedi. DANTE Didn't you hear me? Caitlin really is getting married. RANDAL Which did you like better: Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back. DANTE (exasperated) Empire. RANDAL Blasphemy. DANTE Empire had the better ending: Luke gets his hand cut off, and finds out Vader's his father; Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. And that's life-a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets. RANDAL There was something else going on in Jedi. I never noticed it until today. RANDAL follows DANTE as he cleans up around the store. DANTE What's that? then came reference #1 from the script, followed by: RANDAL You know what else I noticed in Jedi? DANTE There's more? RANDAL So they build another Death Star, right? DANTE Yeah. RANDAL Now the first one they built was completed and fully operational before the Rebels destroyed it. DANTE Luke blew it up. Give credit where it's due. RANDAL And the second one was still being built when they blew it up. DANTE Compliments of Lando Calrissian. RANDAL Something just never sat right with me the second time they destroyed it. I could never put my finger on it-something just wasn't right. DANTE And you figured it out? RANDAL Well, the thing is, the first Death Star was manned by the Imperial army-storm troopers, dignitaries- the only people onboard were Imperials. DANTE Basically. RANDAL So when they blew it up, no prob. Evil is punished. DANTE And the second time around...? RANDAL The second time around, it wasn't even finished yet. They were still under construction. DANTE So? RANDAL A construction job of that magnitude would require a helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I'll bet there were independent contractors working on that thing: plumbers, aluminum siders, roofers. DANTE Not just Imperials, is what you're getting at. RANDAL Exactly. In order to get it built quickly and quietly they'd hire anybody who could do the job. Do you think the average storm trooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing and white uniforms. DANTE All right, so even if independent contractors are working on the Death Star, why are you uneasy with its destruction? RANDAL All those innocent contractors hired to do a job were killed- casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. (notices Dante's confusion) All right, look-you're a roofer, and some juicy government contract comes your way; you got the wife and kids and the two-story in suburbia-this is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. All of a sudden these left-wing militants blast you with lasers and wipe out everyone within a three-mile radius. (MORE) RANDAL (CONT'D) You didn't ask for that. You have no personal politics. You're just trying to scrape out a living. The BLUE-COLLAR MAN joins them. BLUE-COLLAR MAN Excuse me. I don't mean to interrupt, but what were you talking about? RANDAL The ending of Return of the Jedi. DANTE My friend is trying to convince me that any contractors working on the uncompleted Death Star were innocent victims when the space station was destroyed by the rebels. |

Doolittle uses it to surf to his death in the atmosphere of the planet the crew were supposed to blow up. Both THX 1138 and Dark Star were student films which were expanded to features. I don't know whether this was a friendly bit of rivalry on Carpenter's part or that he really hated the film, but it's hardly complimentary, is it?

Future But finally tonight, finally tonight I just want to talk about the future. The future. Where will the future be? Science Fiction writers, they write it down, they write it down in books. And then it becomes films, and then it all comes to pass, like those doors in Star Trek (makes whooshing sound) we've got them now! That's about it! But that's happened. And they had The Empire Strikes Back, the fifth of the four Star Wars films. He is f***ing with us numerically, isn't he! "Children, count up to ten." "Four, five six, one, two three, ten" No, it goes four, five, six, one, two, three...No, it goes: four, five six. One. Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, "brr brr, berr brr" who needs a punch up the bracket!" That's another one, that's the punch right there. Up the bracket (points to face.) This is the bracket, I think. I didn't know, my dad used to say it to me, "You need a good punch up the bracket!" No he didn't, actually. He used to say, "I'll smash you through that wall!" So, uh, where was I going? Yes, yes, yes, so Star Wars, I mean they had the Death Star. Death Star is a very...almost like a New York name, The Death Star. It gets to the point. (in an American accent) What's that star? It's the Death Star "What does it do?" It does death! It does death, buddy! Get out of my way...with your centiliters and your milliliters, your f***ing combine harvesters." Sporadic laugh that was (mimics laugh), It's like I've gone in and removed some of your entrails...Ish...you know. Anyway.
Death Star Canteen So, uh, yeah, but the Death Star, the one thing about the Death Star is that there was no food. No one had food at all. No food at all~ No one said, "Hey, Darth Vader, Emperor, just nipping down to alpha beta 9. What d'you want? Couple of *sarnies? Um, chicken, ham, ham, chicken, egg, what? Coke? Diet Coke? What d'you want? What d'you want? You weird bleeders!" But there must have been a Death Star canteen, yeah? there must have been a cafeteria downstairs, in between battles, where Darth Vader could just chill and go down (Vader voice) "I will have the penne a la arrabiata." (server voice) "you'll need a tray." (Vader) "Do you know who I am?" "This is not a game of who the f*** are you. For I am Vader. Darth Vader. Lord Vader. I can kill you with a single thought!" (server) "Well, you'll still need a tray." (Vader) "No, I will not need a tray. I do not need a tray to kill you. I can kill you without a tray, with the power of the Force - which is strong within me - even though I could kill you with a tray if I so wished. Lord Darth Sir Lord Vader of Cheam. Sir Lord Baron von Vaderham. The Death Star. I run the Death Star." (server) "What's the Death Star?" (Vader losing patience) "this is the Death Star. Why, with the power of the Death Star, do we not have a tray that is f***ing dry? I do not... (someone cutting in line) No, no, no. I was here first." "You have to form a queue if you want food. Can I have, oh, penne ala arrabiata, that looks nice." "no, no, no. D'you know who I am?" (server butts in) "That's **Jeff Vader, that is." (Vader) "I am not Jeff Vader, I am Darth Vader." (server) "Do you want peas with that?" (Vader) "Peas? You don't have peas! Eddie mentions that British actors are often portrayed as bad guys, then mentions the Empire Strikes Back and the Death Star. After an earlier diatribe about the Britons' strategic use of flags to expand their empire, he imitates a Star Wars Imperial Officer receiving news that the Rebels have arrived with a flag. Eddie does an impression of Darth Vader using a "James Earl Jones" voice, then illustrates how it would sound if his voice was more like Dudley Moore. (Big thanks to John for this reference!) in the Bonus features of the DVD there is the Paris - Raw version of Dress to Circle in this routine Izzard does a similar routine with Darth Vader (from Dress to Kill)...but, it's a little different...it's in French. |

Paula (Parker): You love the original SW trilogy because it's all about storytelling and myth, before CGI ruined everything. You show me a guy who loves Empire and I'll show you a guy who's not afraid of his imagination. Like when Luke gets to the cave and he asks Yoda what's in there and Yoda says... Techie Guy (Patton) imitating Yoda with SW music playing in the background: ...Only what you take with you. Paula: But he goes in anyway because he's not afraid of his own mind. Techie Guy: He's walking the path of the Jedi that's why. Paula: That's you! You're Luke!

Within the context if the film, the male lead opposite Mandy Moore tries to use a Jedi mind trick on Moore's character, to get her to go out on a date with him ... telling her "that is how it is done in Star Wars". When the TV stations are trying to find a signal the interference sounds like Darth Vader's breathing. the US/Alien jet fight through the Grand Canyon is very similar to that of the trench of the Death Star scene. As the President (Pullman) and Dr. Okun (Spiner) come through the door (Area 51) leading to where the alien craft is being held/observed, you can see the writing on either side of the doorway (a large entrance), "R" and "2" , the "R" to the left and the "2" to the right (R2 D2) When the alien craft is released from the platform in Area 51, it hovers. Fan film. Plot as described by Jeff Ciolotti (director) The story of Silent But Deadly is quite simple. George Lucas decides he's had enough of plot-revealing Star Wars fan Web sites. He dispatches his most crafty enforcers, a pair of no-nonsense Imperial Stormtroopers (well, there's quite a bit of nonsense actually), to eliminate the Webmasters of those sites. In Silent But Deadly 2, the troopers are summoned from a seaside vacation to neutralize the latest threat: a crazed fan who has gone on a rampage after waiting in too many Star Wars lines. Silent But Deadly 3 combines characters from the first two and concludes the trilogy in a grand fashion.

_ | Starchaser: the Legend of Orin |
1985 |
- I caught this one on my DVR one night and finally got to watch it. It has many thematic elements in common with Star Wars. Here are some things I noticed:
- Orin finds a sword with no hit. In moments of crisis, he swings
the hilt and a blue blade of energy can be seen.
- The main characters of the "good guys" include: a naive working
boy from a backwater planet (Orin), a roguish pirate (Dagg), the
daughter of a planetary leader (Aviana), a humanoid robot (Silica),
and a smart-alec navigator automaton usually paired with a ship
(Arthur). The main "bad guy" is more machine than man (Zygon).
- The Starchaser (Dagg's ship) and several of the fighters use
sounds of vehicles from the Star Wars trilogy (most noticeable is the
sound of Luke's landspeeder as the Starchaser makes low-altitude flybys)
- Several scenes mirror some from the classic Star Wars trilogy:
The main bad guy gets his hand cut off in the final battle. The
pirate's ship escapes an explosion by flying out of a vent shaft. The
pirate's ship gets caught in an energy beam. The main female lead
wears white and has a valet robot. The ghosts of previous generations
of heroes appear at the final celebration of freedom. The bad guys
put a bounty on the crew of the pirate's ship.
- Reverse references (Star Wars Ep1-3 trilogy, Special Edition OT):
The main bad guy gets cut in half by an energy blade. The bad guy
gets pushed into molten lava. The main viewport of the enemy's
flagship gets destroyed while the good guys are on the bridge. The
main female lead's white outfit is form-fitting. The valet robot
fires a weapon at other robots. The main female lead goes to the
slums in disguise. After the fall of the evil dictatorship, the
celebrants exclaim "We're free!". The evil armies consist of
thousands of robots. The good guys neutralize the evil armies by
accident. One of the robotic characters wakes up and complains about
being "naked". The good guys run into a corridor with hundreds of
evil soldiers.
Dag is clearly based on Han Solo, the ship on C3PO, the hilt on a lightsaber, etc.

This movie not only took elements from Star Wars, it seems that other elements were borrowed for Episodes V and VI. [1] The most obvious references seem to be Count Zarth Arn (Vader in looks, Dr. Doom in dialogue), and while the name is ever so similar to "Darth" the character was actually named after Zarth Arn from Edmond Hamilton's Star Kings (Amazing Stories) and the lightsaber duel. Note the second photo shows the "good" Emperor of the Galaxy (Plummer) appearing in holographic form (which seems to be a reverse reference for ESB) and the evil Count Zarth Arn (Spinell), who has a mysterious super weapon, to the left and on the posters (Vader-esque mask) The first poster had too many similarities to ANH's posters and the second seemed to be more along the lines of Battlestar Galactica even though you can see the "lightsaber" there: The line, "I hope this star buggy hold together!" |

Stewie parks his rental car outside a hotel, when he comes out three Jawas are all over it scrounging for parts, they see him and exclaim, "Oooteeegeee" and Stewie shouts, "Ooteegee indeed, filthy creatures. (Thanks to The Gorn for these references and to Master_Kenobi17 for dialogue #1!) The keeper asks him how he knew it so easily and so quickly and Peter comments on the monogrammed mug. (Thanks to The Gorn for this reference!) |
